WATCH: US TikTok star ‘stunned’ to find SA has Apple Pay, Uber…

Don’t let our state electricity provider fool you, South Africa has a highly modernised society – as one US TikTok creator recently learned.

We shouldn’t hold this against an American who wants to broaden her horizons, really. International culture isn’t really a strong topic for our friends across the Atlantic – and when TikTok star Aubrey landed in SA earlier this month, she found herself on a steep learning curve.

TikTok star gives glowing review of South Africa!

The social media sensation has seen her recent videos about visiting South Africa go viral. To her credit, Aubrey – or @Aubs.Ba.Daubs, as per her TikTok handle – has admitted that travel has been ‘the best form of education’ since she embarked on her journey to Mzansi.

Our welcome visitor has admitted that she had a few ‘misconceptions’ about our Republic before she came here. Some of it is quite comical, if we’re being honest. In a video that has been viewed 1.5 million times, Aubrey lists the biggest eye-openers she’s experienced during her trip.

  • Apple Pay: The TikTok creator was left stunned by the amount of places that take credit cards and digital payment options.
  • Acceptance of ‘Gay Culture’: Our travelling yank was shocked to find that South Africans are, on the whole, quite LGBTQI+ friendly.
  • Uber Trips: Aubrey also expressed surprise about how easy it is to book an Uber in our big cities. Alas, Bolt didn’t get a mention.

‘Millions of viewers’ treated to Mzansi’s wholesome side

We’ve had a little laugh at this, but to be fair, it’s actually a brilliant boost for South Africa’s recovering tourism industry. Aubrey has so far uploaded 26 clips to TikTok, showcasing the best this country has to offer – and they’ve fetched over 3.5 million views in total.

“I’ve gone from Cape Town to Durban, then to Kruger National Park, then Johannesburg and Polokwane. I though I’d need cash everywhere, but I don’t! Not only do they take credit card, but Apple Pay too. South Africa have that in more places than I’ve seen in America.”

“There was a misconception I had about ‘gay culture’. I thought we’d have to be more closeted… but being gay is celebrated and normal here. It’s no big deal. Then there’s the transportation. Uber is just as easy to get here as it is in the US.” | @Aubs.Ba.Daubs
