A 54-year-old former South African National Defence Force (SANDF) official has been sentenced to life imprisonment for rape of a 11-year-old girl in Tshwane, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed.

Fani Pehlelolo Segole was staying at Thaba Tshwane where the mother of the minor child was renting a place to stay, at the time of the incident.

“On 12 March 2018, while the minor was conversing with her mother, she informed her that Segole had raped her earlier that year. The mother reported the matter to the police and Segole was arrested,” said NPA Regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

EX-SANDF OFFICIAL HAD PLEADED NOT GUILTY FOR RAPE

According to the NPA, when the matter was heard at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, the former SANDF official opted to plead not guilty to the rape charge, but the judge was convinced by the little girl’s testimony during the trial. The child testified about how deeply affected she was by the incident and that she no longer trusts men.

“Prosecutor Annalizer Stiles asked the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment because, not only was Segole seen as a leader in the community but the children looked up to him as a father figure and he abused that relationship”

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv Sibongile Mzinyathi has lauded the SAPS for their contribution to the rape case, saying he hopes the sentence handed down will send a strong message to the perpetrators of similar crimes, especially towards minors.

Meanwhile in Free State, SAPS have launched a manhunt for two men in connection with two separate rape incidents in the Welkom and Grabouw areas. In Welkom, a 32-year-old woman reported a case of rape, which is alleged to have occurred in October 2021.

The woman reported that she was at the hiking spot near the intersection in Koppie Alleen road in Riebeeckstad. Then, an unknown man accosted her from behind, said police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng.
