Closing arguments are set to begin in the bail applications of five individuals accused of aiding Thabo Bester’s escape from prison.

Closing arguments in the bail applications of five individuals accused of helping rapist Thabo Bester escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre (MCC) last year will be heard in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 23 May.

THABO BESTER’S CO-ACCUSED APPLY FOR BAIL

Senohe Matsoara, Buti Masemola, Tieho Frans Makhotsa, Nastassja Jansen and Teboho Lipholo return to court on Tuesday.

Bester’s alleged lover, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, opted not to apply for bail and intends to challenge the legality of her arrest and detention. Magudumana’s father, Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, is the only accused currently out on bail.

The main case returns to the Bloemfontein Court on 20 June. The accused face charges of fraud, arson and helping a prisoner escape.

Last week, a State investigator was on the witness stand and detailed how each of the accused applying for bail was allegedly linked to the escape.

Matsoara, Masemola, Makhotsa and Jansen worked at the prison at the time of the prison break. Lipholo, a CCTV technician, was also working at the MCC through a third party.
