Taxi association chairperson gunned down in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga SAPS reckon 58-year-old Rooi Mahlangu sadly became another victim of taxi killings in the Nkangala District

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has confirmed that 58-year-old Rooi Isaac Mahlangu, the chairperson of the a Taxi Association in Kwamhlanga has been shot dead.

The incident is said to have occurred in Siyabuswa B on Saturday, 2 July 2022 around 15:00.

“According to the information, on that fateful day about three armed men emerged from nowhere and randomly shot at the victim before they fled the scene on foot. The emergency personnel were informed about the incident the arrival where they took the victim to a nearby hospital but unfortunately the man succumbed to the injuries,” SAPS Mpumalanga spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.

Mpumalanga SAPS reckon Mahlangu sadly became another victim of taxi killings in the Nkangala District.

Police at Siyabuswa opened a murder case and during their preliminary investigation, discovered cartridges at the scene where the shooting took place.

“The public is urged to assist with information on the whereabouts of the suspects by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” Mohlala said.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has in the meantime called on members of the public to come forth with information that may assist the investigators to put the perpetrators behind bars.

“A situation like this cannot be allowed to continue unabated. The suspects should be hunted down and swiftly brought to book,” she said.
