The father of Babalo Ndwayana, the black Stellenbosch University student who pressed charges against a fellow white student for urinating on his property, says he was left disgusted after finding out what had happened to his son.

Thenus du Doit entered Ndwayana’s dorm room on Sunday while he was sleeping and began urinating on his desk, including his books and laptop that was reportedly loaned to him by the university. Video of the incident, recorded by Ndwayana, went viral on social media and sparked outrage.

Du Toit has since been suspended by the university, pending the finalisation of its investigation into the incident.

Speaking to eNCA about the urination incident, Babalo Ndwayana’s father, Mkuseli Kaduka says he also felt helpless as he is in a different province and couldn’t rush to be with him.

“My first reaction when I heard was utter disgust and powerlessness. If you are not aware, I am in the Eastern Cape and my son is in the Western Cape and once such things happen, you would want to be by your son’s side immediately,” he told the broadcaster.

Kaduka says he is also grateful that the story about his son has garnered the attention it has and hopes that Stellenbosch University will now deal more decisively with such matters moving forward.

He has further supported Ndwayana’s decision to pursue criminal charges against du Toit, as he believes neither the perpetrator nor his family have shown true remorse for what has happened.

“Had the perpetrator and his famiy shown that they are remorseful, they would have long by now reached out to us as Babalo’s familly and yet nothing like that has happened. So I have been pushing for that to happen (criminal charges) so that they can understand the gravity of the situation”
