Eskom announced that Stage 6 load shedding would be implemented on Wednesday afternoon just before the more severe power cuts are meant to kick in.

STAGE 6 LOAD SHEDDING FROM MIDDAY

Stage 6 load shedding will commence from 12:00 until further notice, said the power supplier.

Eskom said the load shedding was due to a high number of breakdowns at Power Stations since midnight, as well as the need to preserve its emergency generation reserves.

The power supplier is yet to issue a full statement on the breakdowns.

As previously reported, earlier on Wednesday it said Stage 4 load shedding would be implemented from 9:00.

Since the power supplier burnt through its annual diesel budget within months it is unable to rely on the Open Cycle Gas Turbines as much as it usually does.

As previously reported, A generating unit each at Camden and Kendal Power Stations was taken offline for repairs over the last day and there was a delay in returning units to service at Arnot, Kriel and Matla Power Stations on Tuesday.

A number of activities in the coming weeks and months will significantly reduce Eskom’s generation capacity and increase the incidence of load shedding over the next six to 12 months. These include “the refuelling and maintenance outage starting this week, as well as the long-term operation project of Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, together with the October chimney failure that has forced three generation units offline at Kusile Power Station…”
