STAGE 6 LOAD SHEDDING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Eskom escalated load shedding to Stage 6 late on Tuesday. Stage 4 load shedding was meant to be in place between 5:00 and 16:00 until further notice.

The power supplier said on Wednesday that severe capacity constraints mean that Stage 6 power cuts need to be implemented for longer.

“Eskom will continue to manage the limited emergency generation reserves to supplement generation capacity. Eskom will publish a further update as soon as there are any significant changes.”

11 GENERATORS HAVE BROKEN DOWN SINCE TUESDAY

Eleven generating units have broken down since Tuesday morning. These have a capacity of 5084MW. The breakdowns have further reduced the availble capacity and necessitated an increase in the stages of load shedding.

A unit each went down at Camden, Duvha, Grootvlei, Hendrina and Kendal power stations while two units each broke down at Kriel, Majuba and Matla.

A unit each returned to service at Camden, Duvha, Hendrina, Kriel, Matimba and Matla Power Stations. This represents 2540MW of capacity.

As things stand, 5739MW is unavailable due to planned maintenance while a further 18 041MW of capacity is offline due to breakdowns.

“Eskom requests the public to reduce the usage of electricity and to exercise patience and tolerance during this difficult period.”
