Afriforum says it was left surprised after learning that singer Kelly Khumalo may have been directly implicated in Senzo Meyiwa’s murder.

Advocate Malesela Teffo, the defence lawyer of four of the accused, told the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday that an eyewitness will testify that Khumalo mistakenly pulled the trigger that ended Meyiwa’s life.

The footballer was shot dead in what police suspect was a botched robbery in October 2014 – at Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus. Khumalo, who was his girlfriend at the time, has vowed to break her silence. She has said via her attorney Magdalene Moonsamy that she will take decisive action, in response to the allegations levelled against her by Teffo.

“We are absolutely making formal submissions, this (is) intimidation that has been ongoing against myself and my client and (it is also) public persecution. We need to know which eyewitness is that?” Moonsamy told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika in an interview.

Meyiwa’s family turned to Afriforum for help in bringing their son’s killer to justice after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) seemingly made no progress in the case.

AFRIFORUM WEIGHS IN ON KELLY KHUMALO BEING IMPLICATED

Afriforum’s Private Prosecution Unit says it first needs to determine whether the claim of an eyewitness soon ratting out Kelly Khumalo in Senzo Meyiwa’s killing is true.

“As Afriforum’s Private Prosecution Unit we first need to establish whether we have both got the same interpretation of “eyewitness” because in our understanding of the evidence that is in the docket being presented by the state, there is no eyewitness, in fact anybody in that room that witnessed the crime taking place. So we are very surprised to hear this from advocate Teffo. If this is the case, it is a very serious submission that he has made”

Afriforum’s Barry Bateman

Speaking to eNCA, the lobby group’s Barry Bateman says if Teffo’s claim is true, he should have made submissions long before.
