A gang of armed suspects killed a security officer in a drive-by shooting in Springfield Park in Durban early on Monday morning.

Emer-G-Med paramedics spokesperson Kyle Van Reenen said the security officer was just arriving at his work place in the early hours of Monday morning at around 6am when unknown suspects opened fire on him.

“Just after 6am this morning, Emer-G-Med paramedics were called to the scene of a shooting incident on Electron Road in the Springfield Park area,” Van Reenen said.

“On arrival on scene a man believed to approximately fifty years of age, was found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared deceased on arrival of paramedics,” he said.

“Reports from the scene allege the man to be a security officer who was shot by an unknown number of suspects in a drive by shooting, as he was arriving at his place of work.”

“The South African Police Services were in attendance and will be conducting the necessary investigation accordingly,” Van Reenen added.

The Springfield Park area including, Makro and the Nike factory shop was among the hardest hit business districts during the recent unrest, rioting and looting. Several shops were severely damaged when looters set the stores alight leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
