SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said the case would be opened at the Hillbrow Police Station on Monday, 6 March, in accordance with Section 34 of the Prevention and Combatting of Corruption Activities Act (PRECCA).

The section says, “any person who holds a position of authority” has a duty to report corrupt transactions.

“In an exclusive interview on ETV, the outgone CEO of Eskom, Andre de Ruyter, revealed that there are organised syndicates involved in sabotage, theft, and corruption at Eskom. That the money being stolen from Eskom amounts to R1 billion from Eskom every month,” said Vavi.

After the interview aired, Shaku claims they wrote to de Ruyter and demanded that he explains if he reported the matter to the police, and if not, he would have to explain his actions.

“SAFTU has not received a response from Mr. de Ruyter. Hence, we are laying the charges,” said Vavi.
