Nearly 700 motorists were arrested for various traffic offences over the busy Easter weekend, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). Despite the arrests, the traffic management body commended travellers for being generally well-behaved.

MOTORISTS WELL-BEHAVED OVER EASTER WEEKEND, SAYS RTMC

According to SABC News, RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said 699 people were arrested for driving under the influence, speeding and producing false documents, among other offences.

“The conduct of many motorists on the roads has been commendable, the majority of them have behaved very well,” said Zwane.

“But of course, there are those who have not been behaving well but we know tomorrow a large majority of people will be driving back and we are advising to really restrain themselves and resist the temptation to break the rules of the roads, because there are many people who’ve already been arrested,” he added.

In an unrelated incident, the N3 highway in KwaZulu-Natal between Hilton and Cedara is open again following the fatal pile-up on Monday. At least 35 vehicles were involved in the crash, and five people were killed.
