Former police officer, Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu, who was found guilty of plotting to murder her partner and five relatives has been sentenced to six terms of life imprisonment for her crimes.

Ndlovu, a former police officer, plotted the murder of her partner Maurice Mabasa, and five of her relatives in order to claim hefty life insurance payouts. She was also found guilty of four counts of fraud and for defeating the ends of justice.

Judge Ramarumo Monama sentenced Ndlovu to life in prison for each of the six murder counts in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, on Friday 5 November. He also sentenced her to an additional five years for defeating the ends of justice and 10-years for each of the counts of fraud.

When he delivered the guilty verdict Judge Ramarumo Monama earlier said that he was satisfied that the state had proved its case against her  beyond a reasonable doubt.

Murder convicted showed no remorse

During sentencing Monama said that Ndlovu had not shown remorse for the murders and had clearly been involved in the killing of her own relatives for her personal financial gain.

According to News24, Monama said in his ruling: “The accused monetised the lives of her relatives, she saw them as a commodity. The lawlessness in which she carried out her criminality threatens the very existence of society.”

He said that her crimes were ‘heinous’ and she had committed them while she was a police officer who was meant to serve and protect. He said Ndlovu needed to be removed from society for a long time.

“She acted in distinct contradiction of the expectation held for police officers,” News24 reported.

Ndlovu’s legal representative, Vincent Soko, asked the court for leave to appeal her murder conviction and sentence saying that another court would come to a different decision.

However, the court dismissed the application.
