A 22-year-old driver has been charged with reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with the duties of a driver following an accident

The 22-year-old truck driver who allegedly caused the massive pile-up on the M41 Highway near Umhlanga, Durban, appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 8 March.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Sithulile Siyabonga Nhlanhlayethu Zulu is charged with reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with the duties of a driver following the accident.
As previously reported, Zulu fled the accident scene, and later that night, he surrendered himself to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“At the time of the accident, the driver fled. He only handed himself in later last night, and the 23-year-old suspect was charged with reckless and negligent driving. He will be appearing before court soon,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thejiswa Ngcobo.
The case was postponed on Wednesday to allow the State to gather bail information. The accused is remanded in custody at Westville Prison until 15 March.
