The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the Bolt driver accused of rape will likely face more charges after two other women came forward.

The 25-year-old made a brief appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 8 March 2022, facing two counts of rape, two of kidnapping and two of robbery.

The man was arrested at Kya Sands Informal Settlement last week Saturday, not long after one of the alleged victim’s friends posted about the ordeal on social media.

“A Bolt driver raped my friend last night, he strangled her half to death and took her virginity. Bolt doesn’t care about our safety, their Instagram page is filled with people complaining about assault and they have done nothing about it,” she wrote on Twitter at the time.

The NPA’s Phindi Mjonondwane anticipates that four more charges, including rape will be added against the Bolt driver.

But that’s not all – the South African Police Service (SAPS) has also confirmed to The South African that the driver may be linked to other rape cases, where he allegedly used the same modus operandi.

The case against him was postponed to 15 March and Mjonondwane says they intend opposing bail for the suspect, whose identity has been withheld for now.

“The State will be opposing his release on bail, we will advance our reasons in court, but just, in short, the accused faces charges of a serious nature, and we are duty bound as the NPA to ensure the protection of our women and children,”

Bolt has since suspended him from its platform, pending the outcome of the case.

One of the alleged victim’s friend, who was in court, told media that her friend couldn’t attend proceedings as she was still traumatised by the incident.

“Just last week, she had to go back to the hospital because of a complication, she cannot go to sleep, she still sees his eyes and can still smell [him]. It’s still a long journey, but we are going to be there for her,” she said.
