Cyril Ramaphosa is set to renew his hostilities with the Public Protector Busiswe Mkhwebane, after it was confirmed that the Chapter 9 institution would lead an investigation into the president’s conduct during ‘Farmgate’.

Cyril Ramaphosa set for another showdown with Public Protector

It’s been a tumultuous week or so for Mr. Ramaphosa: Ex-SSA boss Arthur Fraser filed criminal charges against Cyril, claiming that he attempted to cover up a robbery at one of his farms in Limpopo. Burglars allegedly found MILLIONS of dollars hidden at the property.

What is Cyril accused of doing?

President Ramaphosa has argued that this money is used exclusively for ‘game transactions’, but few people are buying this version of events. Two political parties have approached the SA Revenue Service (SARS), to confirm if this large volume of foreign currency had been legally declared.

Accusations continue to swirl around the head of state, and it’s also alleged that his bodyguards tried to ‘bribe and beat’ the robbers who stumbled across the mysterious cash stash. However, these claims still need verifying.

Mkhwebane vs Ramaphosa, ready to go again…

The Public Protector will now lead the probe into Ramaphosa’s behaviour, with the pair clashing once more. During his tenure as president, Cyril has ended up in several legal tangles with Busisiwe Mkhwebane – emerging victorious on each occasion.

Back in March, Ramaphosa asked Mkhwebane for written reasons why she SHOULD NOT be suspended, following a raft of questionable findings. Her fate, ironically, remains in his hands – and critics of the president now fear a ‘conflict of interest’.

Public Protector ‘gets another crack’ at the president

Mkhwebane’s office will have to establish if the president broke Parliament’s Code of Ethics during Farmgate. The complaint was registered by Vuyo Zungula, a serving MP and the current leader of the ATM party. He also pushed for a no-confidence vote in Ramaphosa earlier this year.
