Engen said the star of a viral video, which has gripped South Africa since it hit the internet on Sunday, 3 April, fled the scene when one of its truck drivers stopped to investigate.

In the video, the man can be seen holding onto the back of a fuel tanker speeding down a Gauteng highway.

ENGEN SAYS TROLLEY DASHER DISAPPEARED

Engen said, on Tuesday, it was thankful to the members of the public who alerted the driver of the bulk fuel truck to the matter.

“…we commend the driver for safely bringing the vehicle to a stop,” said the fuel company.

When the driver stopped the tanker to investigate, the trolley dasher had fled the scene. Engen said no injuries were reported.

According to the Gauteng Traffic police, the incident took place along the N1 South, to the east of Pretoria. Investigations into the trolley dasher’s antics are underway and Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane vowed that he would be caught soon.

“The GTP would like to warn hitchhikers that such irresponsible behaviour is punishable by law enforcement authorities,” said the spokesperson.

“One may be convicted to a one-year direct imprisonment without the option of a fine if convicted in a court of law.”
