The Chief Registrar of the Pretoria High Court confirmed on Friday, 10 March, that the insolvency rehabilitation certificate presented by Tshwane Mayor Murunwa Makwarela is fake.

Makwarela Faces Criminal Proceedings Following High Court’s Finding of Fake Insolvency Notice

Tumelo Refilwe Ledwaba, the Chief Registrar, said the Pretoria Court never issued the insolvency rehabilitation certificate.

“I also confirm that no rehabilitation order has ever been issued regarding the parties named in the said document,” said Ledwaba.

Makwarela was disqualified as a COPE PR Councillor – and effectively mayor – after a public tip-off alleged he was insolvent.

Makwarela produced a document that claimed he was rehabilitated, which has now been deemed fake.

DA Calls for Mayor’s Prosecution Over Alleged Forgery and Insolvency Fraud

On Friday, speaking to Sunday Times, Makwarela slammed the investigation into his finances and referred to it as a “rude interruption” to his work. He made these comments before the High Court revelation.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader John Steenhuisen weighed in on the controversy and posted a tweet that showed the alleged fake certificate alongside the statement issued by the Pretoria High Court. All the errors in the certificate were circled in red.

“Not only is the fake ‘Mayor’ of Tshwane an unrehabilitated insolvent, it also appears he is into forgery. He should be charged, and the only chains he should wearing are ones around his wrists. Disgraceful!” said Steenhuisen.

To make matters worse for Makwarela, the Pretoria High Court indicated that they are referring the matter to the Hawks for the institution of criminal proceedings.
