Heavily armed gunmen wreak havoc at fuel station, blow up ATMs and safe

The suspects detonated explosives, bombed two ATMs, and opened the Capitec ATM, according to a police spokesperson.

A heavily armed group of men stormed a fuel station in Seshego, Polokwane and wreaked havoc in the early hours of Friday, 31 March. The suspects were carrying rifles and pistols and set off a number of explosives.

No injuries reported in robbery, but extensive damage caused

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspects hit the fuel station near Magofe outside Seshego at approximately 1:30 on Friday.

“According to the information received, unknown number of men [sic] armed with rifles and pistols stormed the garage’s kiosk and ordered everyone to lie on the ground.

“These men allegedly proceeded to the store where they opened the Capitec ATM, and also detonated the drop-in safe, which caused an extensive [sic] damage to the whole store and stock,” said the police spokesperson.

Outside the kiosk, the suspects also allegedly bombed two ATMs and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No injuries were reported, but a taxi parked near the ATMs was damaged by the explosions.
