South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said the Free State Anti-Corruption Unit swooped on the suspect following the incident on 7 March.
At approximately 5:30 on 7 March, the accused accepted an undisclosed amount of money from a taxi driver who allegedly crossed the border into Lesotho with illegal immigrants.
“The taxi driver and four illegal immigrants were arrested on the spot by members from the Border Management Authorities and they are currently in custody after being denied bail,” said Kareli.
The 44-year-old accused has already appeared in court and is currently out on R3000 bail. Her next appearance in the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court is expected on 21 April. She is charged with corruption, aiding and abetting and defeating the ends of justice.
The investigation continues.
