KZN police swooped on a gang of alleged hijackers at the Mooi River Toll Plaza on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal police acting on intelligence have arrested three suspects and recovered the hijacked vehicle they were travelling in on the N3 towards Durban.

SAPS regional spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said that the police had received the intelligence on Tuesday about the suspected armed robbers and kidnappers.

“Intelligence was received yesterday about a group of men who are suspected to be involved in robberies, kidnapping and hijackings in Gauteng,” Mbele said.

“It was reported that the suspects were travelling in a vehicle with cloned registration plates from Gauteng to Kwazulu-Natal,” she said.

“An operational team from various units in the SAPS was mobilised and they were deployed at the Mooi River Toll Plaza,” Mbele said.

She said the police swooped on the suspects as they approached the toll plaza.

Mbele said that the vehicle was spotted driving on the southbound lane towards the toll plaza. The suspect’s path of travel was blocked by police officers and they were searched.”

“Investigations conducted at the scene revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Gauteng. Three suspects aged between 25 and 29 were placed under arrest for possession of a suspected stolen property,” Mbele said.

Mbele said the three suspects are expected to appear in the Mooi River Magistrates Court to face criminal charges today.

“Investigations concerning their involvement in other crimes are continuing, Mbele said.
