Police and private security officers have arrested two suspects in connection with the shooting of a policeman at the Tursong Centre in Inhlazuka in Mid Illovo.

A gang of armed robbers gunned down the policeman when he walked outside the local charge office to investigate the commotion he could hear outside at the post office.

“The post office at Tursong Centre in Inhlazuka in Mid Illovo area was busy with a pension payout when five males with firearms stormed the premises. An SAPS official who was manning the satellite charge office in the same building, heard the commotion and came out to investigate,” Suleiman said.

The suspects opened fire at him and he died at the scene of the crime.

“The suspects then fled with cash in two white vehicles. Description of the vehicles were provided by the community,” Suleiman said.

Mid-Illovo SAPS and Magma Security as well as SAPS Flying squad were immediately notified and provided with a description the vehicles.

“Two white Datsun Go’s were intercepted by SAPS members and Magma Security between the main road  Mid Illovo SAPS and the Eston main road.  Both drivers were arrested and confirmed that they were the drivers who brought the suspects to commit the robbery.  Both suspects were detained at Mid Illovo SAPS,” Suleiman said.

“Information was received that the remaining suspects had hijacked a white Toyota Hilux.  Magma Security and SAPS recovered the vehicle near the Umkomazi River where the suspects fled on foot,” he said.

He said the SAPS K9 unit had searched for the suspects without success.  The police investigation is ongoing.
