The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) turned down Oscar Pistorius’s parole bid on Friday, 31 March.

In a scant statement, the Department said the CSPB granted Pistorius a further profile for August 2024, which means he can apply for parole next year.

“The reason provided is that the inmate did not complete the minimum Detention Period as ruled by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) (as per the clarification provided on 28 March 2023,” read the statement.

Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day in 2013. He has served almost a decade of his 13-year jail sentence.

Pistorius made representations before the parole board on Friday. Reeva’s mother, June, also made representations on behalf of the family, who are opposed to the former Paralympian’s early release.

“It was very unpleasant for her – the circumstances. But she knows that she had to do it for Reeva, and she did it and I am very proud of her, and she is very relieved that it’s over.

“Obviously, how she felt and what her feelings are. And as I have said before, she doesn’t feel that he’s rehabilitated and hasn’t told the truth, and for that, both her and Barry submit that he must not be released on parole,” said the Steenkamp family lawyer, according to SABC News.
