‘Sharp increase’ in Tshwane’s COVID hospitalisations – most unvaccinated

If any unvaccinated citizens are still ‘doing their own research’, they should definitely have a look at this data coming in from Tshwane.

Tshwane, the current hot-spot of the Omicron variant outbreak, is now experiencing a ‘sharp increase’ in the number of patients who have been hospitalised by the virus. During a Health Department briefing on Monday, it was also revealed that 87% of these admissions were ‘unvaccinated’.

Latest COVID-19 news: Sharp increase in Tshwane hospitalisations, majority of patients unvaccinated

Dr. Waasila Jassat made her findings public earlier today, and they tell a stark tale about the direction of this pandemic. The Omicron variant is thought to have a transmission advantage over Delta, sparking a wave of new infections in Gauteng. As cases rise, it is inevitable that hospitalisations and deaths will follow.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Omicron is a deadlier strain. If a variant is deemed more transmissible, that means it is capable of spreading faster, and causing an increase in fresh cases. Even with our vaccines, it’s worth remembering that around 64% of South Africans haven’t been jabbed. So pressure on hospitals is inevitable.

Tshwane hospitalisations: Damning stats for the unvaccinated

Dr. Jassat explained that a majority of patients who needed hospital treatment were elderly, or suffering from various comorbidities. However, another parallel has emerged: Nearly nine out of ten new admissions are unvaccinated.

“The highest risk of hospital admissions is high in older groups, looking at the percentage of admissions and those who have comorbidities. As we would expect, most of the older groups have comorbidities and are admitted with COVID-19.”

“There has been a sharp increase in hospital admissions in Tshwane. We are starting to see increases in other districts in hospital admissions since the past week. Interestingly, most hospital admissions are in unvaccinated individuals.”

No jab, no jol? Data supports pleas for vaccines

The data was shared visually during the media briefing, revealing just how successful our vaccines are when it comes to preventing severe illness. President Ramaphosa has warned the unvaccinated that jab mandates are now being considered, and other leading scientists have called indoor events to open ‘only to the fully immunised’.
