The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) is set to march to the Department of Public Enterprises in Pretoria on Friday, 15 July 2022, over unpaid salaries at Denel. According to NUMSA, their members at Denel Metal Pressings (PMP) have not been paid their salaries for the last three months.

NUMSA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said workers recently received 1-years outstanding salary payment because the union approached the court, which granted an order to attach Denel’s bank accounts for workers to be paid.

“However, it seems history is repeating itself because workers have not been paid for April, May, June and we suspect that they will not be paid at the end of July as well. At the same time, Denel is restructuring and there are fears that jobs could be lost,” Hlubi-Majola said.

NUMSA WANTS DENEL WORKERS ‘PAID URGENTLY’

NUMSA, which already isn’t happy with Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and how he has presided over some of the country’s state-owned entities, claims Denel workers have already suffered the most extreme brutality by him and will demand that they be paid their salaries urgently.

The union also wants Gordhan removed from his post.

“We are marching to demand that DPE must pay workers urgently. NUMSA continues to demand that Pravin Gordhan must be removed. He is an SOE wrecking ball. The students at Wits Business School were right to kick him out and to boo him. He has caused a lot of suffering because of his failures”
