Northern Cape: Teenager convicted for rape, murder of elderly woman

The 17-year-old attacked an 81-year-old woman at her home in Cassel Village, Northern Cape, where he raped, murdered and robbed her

A 17-year-old boy in the Northern Cape will serve an effective 18 years in prison after being convicted of murder, rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has said.

“The Northern Cape Provincial SAPS Management welcomed a jail term handed down to a 17-year-old boy on three counts; robbery aggravating, murder and rape. The accused was found guilty and sentenced by the Northern Cape High Court on Saturday, 11 June, 2022,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana.

The teenager is said to have attacked an elderly woman at her home in July 2021, raping and murdering her, before fleeing the scene with her belongings.

“In July 2021 the accused accosted a 81-year-old elderly woman, at her home in Cassel village where he raped, murdered and robbed her of her belongings. The accused was arrested and the investigating officer Lieutenant Colonel Doggy Magugu successfully opposed bail, and he was kept in police custody until the finalisation of trial”

WHAT WAS THE NORTHERN CAPE TEENAGER CONVICTED OF?

According to Northern Cape SAPS, the boy was found guilty and sentenced as follows;

Count 1, Robbery Aggravating- 15 years imprisonment;

Count 2, Murder- 18 years imprisonment;

Count 3, Rape – 18 years imprisonment.

The sentences were ordered to run concurrently. The teenager will serve an effective 18 years imprisonment.

“The Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills commended Lieutenant Colonel Doggy Magugu for excellent investigative work. The Northern Cape High Court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm, and ordered that his name be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register,” Tawana added.
