On Friday, 17 February, a cash in transit (CIT) heist took place on the R28 near Cedar Lodge in the direction of Krugersdorp.

Suspects chased by ground and helicopter

BCI Security, a local security firm, reported that suspects were chased by ground and chopper.

During the chase, the suspects fired multiple shots and hit the fuel tank of the helicopter.

Fortunately, the chopper was able to land safely without any injuries. Currently, multiple security members are chasing down the suspects.

BCI Security advises avoiding the R28 as it will undergo forensic investigation.

Road users are warned to expect delays and avoid the area until declared safe to do so.

What to do if you find yourself in the middle of a CIT heist?

The following important safety tips are provided by CEO of Fidelity Services Group, Wahl Bartmann:

  • Put as much distance as possible between your vehicle and the crime scene. Do not exit your vehicle to avoid getting caught in the crossfire. If possible, vacate the area.
  • Never approach armed and dangerous perpetrators of a cash in transit robbery. Avoid any form of eye or physical contact to keep yourself out of danger.
  • If you find yourself in the vicinity of a CIT robbery, keep your vehicle engine running to escape the incident quickly.
  • Share any videos taken with the authorities to assist with the apprehension of the criminals. Avoid posting on social media channels as it may jeopardize the case.
  • Immediately contact the SAPS at 10111 when caught in a CIT heist, always prioritizing your safety first.
