Police are looking into a bizarre case in which suspects were disturbed while digging up a person’s body from a grave in Nelspruit on 14 December 2022.

Suspects leave panga and what looks like muthi after digging up grave

Masoyi police are investigating an incident in which a grave was dug and suspects were disturbed.

They attempted to exhume the body of a man who was buried a few weeks ago.

Some residents are said to have discovered this shocking incident in the early hours of Wednesday, 14 December.

This at the Jerusalem graveyard in Masoyi outside White River.

The incident was reported to Masoyi police, who arrived at the scene and discovered that the suspects had left a panga, a spade, and a bag containing what appeared to be muthi.

Police suspect the act might be part of a cult ritual

Closer inspection revealed that the grave of a man who died on 23 November 2022, at the age of 19, had been dug.

The suspects had failed to bring the body to the surface.

His family was then summoned, and they are currently determining whether or not his body parts are complete.

Police cannot rule out the possibility that the act was inspired by the practices of a specific cult, but more details will emerge as the investigation progresses.

So far, no one has been arrested, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

They can contact Crime Stoppers at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP.

Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has strongly condemned the incident.

He called it evidence of moral decay in society.

Manamela has promised that police will work with members of the public to bring those responsible to justice.
