A 34-year-old man who stabbed his father to death during a squabble over a piece of meat has appeared in the Vredefort Magistrates Court in the Free State where he is facing a charge of murder.

Kgosi Sehume allegedly stabbed his 55-year old father to death at their home in Mokwallo in Vredefort at the weekend.

SAPS spokesperson for the Fezile Dabi District, Sergeant Josephine Rani said that the Sehume was at home with his girlfriend and his father when a fight broke out over meat that his father had bought.

“On Saturday 2021-11-27 at about 16:38 the suspect was at home with his girlfriend and his father when a fight ensued over meat,” Rani said.

“It is alleged that the suspect wanted to take the meat which the victim bought and the victim refused. During their argument the son stabbed his father twice under the left arm and ran away, Rani said.

Rani said that Sehume’s father had attempted to chase his son moments before he fell to the ground and died after sustaining the two stab wounds under his arm.

“The neighbours noticed the victim fall after hearing noises and they contacted the police,” she said.

SAPS Warrant Officer Petrus Nhlapo arrested the suspect where he found him at one of his friend’s house not far from his home in the Free State.

Sehume is still in custody and is expected to appear in court on 2 December 2021 for his bail application.

Police swoop on five most wanted Free State robbers

The latest Freestate arrest comes after police have arrested a gang of five most wanted suspects aged between 38 and 65 arrested in the Elukwatini area in Mpumalanga. The suspects are wanted for a string of robberies that they had allegedly committed in the Free State.

An SAPS spokesperson said that the Free State Organised Crime Unit, working together with Tactical Response Team members, had followed intelligence driven information to Mpumalanga in Elukwatini where the suspects were found in hiding.   The police swooped on the suspects on Friday 25 November. This was after the latest robbery that took place in Ladybrand, where the suspects allegedly stormed into a chain store and grabbed cellphones, cash and sim-cards.

“The five were arrested after they were positively identified through intelligence led information. They have been detained for robberies that took place between January 2021 and October 2021 in the towns of Hennenman, Theunissen, Viljoenskroon and Ladybrand,” the police spokesperson said.
