National Government has confirmed that the COVID-19 vaccine rollout has been ramped up to allow South Africans between the ages of 18-34 to register ahead of schedule.

From 20 August, members of the public between these ages will be able to register for the jab. This while turnout and registration for the vaccine has shown signs of decline.

When can 18-34 year old’s register for a COVID-19 vaccine?

The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) delivered recommendations to Cabinet suggesting that vaccine registration be made more widely available to the South African public in light of positive efforts to speed up the distribution of jabs.

“Cabinet received the report from the NCCC indicating that over nine million vaccines have been administered in South Africa to date, with over seven million people partially vaccinated and over four million fully vaccinated,” they said.

“Cabinet welcomed the vaccination roll-out plan to increase the uptake of vaccines, particularly in provinces that had shown a reduction in the uptake of vaccines. As part of increasing the vaccination roll-out programme, Cabinet approved the vaccination of persons aged between 18 years and 35 years from 20 August 2021.

SA to remain on Level 3

According to Cabinet, evidence has been taken into account that confirms that once someone receives the vaccine, they stand a better chance at combatting some of COVID-19’s more severe symptoms. They therefore continued to insist that the public get on board with the vaccine rollout and be vigilant of misinformation.

“Scientific evidence confirms that vaccinated people stand a better chance of surviving from COVID-19 than unvaccinated people,” they said. “Therefore, we must all dispel the unfounded and misleading conspiracy theories about the vaccines and choose life by vaccinating.”

Cabinet further approved the keeping of the country under Risk Adjusted Alert level 3 of the national lockdown, as advised by the Ministerial Advisory Committee.
