The death toll in the Boksburg tanker explosion has risen to 26 as of Wednesday, 28 December.

Death toll rises in Boksburg tanker explosion

Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi has confirmed that eight more people have died after the Boksburg tanker explosion.

This brings the total number of deaths to 26.

According to eNCA, Lesufi stated that two people are still missing after the incident.

The tanker got stuck under a bridge and began leaking, resulting in a massive explosion that damaged private and public infrastructure and caused several fatalities.

Driver released due to lack of evidence

The 32-year-old driver of the tanker which exploded on 24 December was released from prison due to lack of evidence on Tuesday, 27 December.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that there is no evidence against the driver.

He was initially arrested and charged on cases of culpable homicide and was due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court.
