South Africa’s long running battle against hijacking incidents appears to be a losing one at the minute. Recent crime stats show how this particular crime is on the rise, and with each day that passes, the crooks seem to be getting evermore creative. Take the drive-thru method, for example.
New hijacking trend puts motorists on high alert
This new trend is now targeting innocent motorists who use the drive-thru options at popular fast-food outlets. Neighbourhood Watch groups have been sharing messages posted recently by Charnel Hattingh, the Head of Communications for Fidelity ADT.
According to the top security official, hijacking gangs use TWO cars to block you in:
“We are increasingly starting to see a concerning trend where criminals target unsuspecting patrons at drive-thru establishments. Typically as you get to the front of the queue, armed suspects from the vehicle in front of you get out and attempt to hijack your vehicle.”

Drive-thru method ‘proving popular’ amongst carjackers
South Africans have been told to stay as vigilant as ever, as the threat of hijacking remains prevalent. Recently, Fidelity also shared a nine-point checklist, advising motorists what to do if they ever fall victim to carjackers. It is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that citizens cooperate with their attackers:
- Do not antagonise your hijackers, and show them you’re not a threat.
- Always use your left arm to undo your seatbelt, and to put the car in neutral.
- Do not turn off your car engine.
- When the time comes, get out of your car slowly – no sudden movements.
- Angle your body sideways from carjackers, to face AWAY from any possible firearms.
- Remember to protect your head with your arms.
- Avoid direct eye-contact with hijackers.
- Try and take in details like what they’re wearing, how they sound etc.
- Above all else, try and remain as calm as you can.
