Mpumalanga: Man’s semi-decomposed body found in stream

The man cannot be recognised facially due to the state of his body and Mpumalanga authorities have launched an investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has confirmed that the semi-decomposed body of a man was discovered Tonga outside Komatipoort just recently.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, it was community members who came across the remains on Friday, 6 January 2023.

“Community members in Kamaqhekeza, Tonga outside Komatipoort were left speechless after the gruesome discovery of a semi-decomposed body of a male on Friday 6 January 2023. According to information, the unknown person was found floating in the stream that runs across the build-up area next to a bridge on the R571 road from Mananga Port of Entry and Komatipoort that separate Block C and Kamaqhekeza,” Mohlala added.

Folliwng the discovery, provincial law enforcement officials were called to the scene. It was subsequently learnt that the man had been dead for quite some time and due to the state of his body’s decomposition, he had become facially unrecognisable.

The mystery man’s remains have been taken in for further analysis and a postmortem will be conducted to determine how exactly he lost his life. It isn’t clear if any foulplay was involved.

“A caller notified police who upon arrival were met with a semi-decomposed body of a middle aged man. Upon investigation it is suspected that the body has been on the stream for some time as the face has already lost recognition, but the entire body is still intact,” Mohlala added.

SAPS Mpumalanga has since urged members of the community in helping identify the man so they can alert his family, who are probably searching for him.

“Police urge community members who might have lost their loved one befitting the description to help police complete their investigation by identifying the body. Community members are requested to visit Tonga SAPS for assistance or call Tonga police on 082 448 9482 alternatively police Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPS App. The Provincial Management hopes to locate the family of the deceased so that he can get a proper send-off. The cause of death is yet to be established pending the postmortem results”
