Commuters on the way to the CBD via the N1 highway in Cape Town were stuck in an unenviable situation on Friday morning, 20 May. An accident on the inbound lane of the highway caused considerable delays.

N1 PILE-UP

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate shared information about the crash at 6:59.

Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs said multiple vehicles were involved in a crash on the N1 after a truck jack-knifed. The highway was closed at Mike Pienaar Boulevard.

Later, at 7:15, Jacobs explained that the crash scene was just before the Plattekloof road and the road closure at Mike Pienaar would remain in place.

“There are 13 vehicles involved in the crash, the amount of injuries has not been determined. This is a dynamic scene, the figures may be adjusted. The full complement of the City’s Emergency Services are on scene,” said Jacobs.

Later, the City of Cape Town’s traffic service announced that the N1 was open despite the accident and said traffic was being diverted around the scene via the Plattekloof Road off-ramp. However, motorists are advised to use Frans Conradie and Voortrekker Road as alternative routes.

N2 ACCIDENT

The traffic service also dealt with an accident on the N2 outbound between Robert Sobukwe and Airport Approach Road.

The two left lanes are closed on that road and motorists are advised to proceed with caution.

As of 10:15, both scenes – on the N1 and N2- are active and the road closures remain in place.

At 10:37, Jacobs said all lanes on the N2 had been reopened. By 12:43, he said the same about the N1 highway.
