The wheels of justice may have turned slowly in this case – but turned they have. Matshela Koko, a one-time senior executive at Eskom, was arrested ‘at the crack of dawn’ on Thursday. What’s more, the authorities have decided to make this a family affair

Matshela Koko ARRESTED – along with wife and step-daughter

His wife Mosima Koko and step-daughter Koketso Choma were also apprehended earlier this morning. In total, eight people have been busted in connection with this operation, and they are due to appear in court at some point on Thursday.

Matshela Koko has been largely blamed for the current state Eskom finds itself in today. One of his most notorious deals concerns the agreement he had in place with the Guptas, giving them the multi-million rand Tegeta contract. However, the corruption goes even further than that.

In 2015, Koko was responsible for dishing out an enormous engineering contract to a Swiss company. His step-daughter had a ton of shares in Asea Brown Boveri, and profited substantially from the deal. The money was also sent through to Mrs. Koko, implicating her in the grift.

Kusile link to Eskom ‘family affair’ contracts

Earlier today, the Hawks issued a statement after swooping on the suspects. They confirmed that the myriad of charges include fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The contracts are also tied to the construction of Kusile Power Station – widely known as ‘Eskom’s problem child’.

“Eight people are expected to appear at the Mpumalanga Middleburg Magistrates’ Court this morning on charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The accused are to be arraigned on charges arising from alleged irregular contracts.”

“These contracts are related to the building of Kusile Power Stations, valued at over R2 billion. The accused were arrested in Gauteng and Mpumalanga this morning at the crack of dawn.” | Hawks
