Completely disturbing video surveillance shows the exact moment a man bursts into flames after being tased by a police officer, an encounter which eventually led to his death. Just before being pounced on by police, the man is seen on the clip rubbing hand sanitiser all over himself.

The video was released by the New York state attorney general on Friday, 7 January 2022, as part of an investigation into the man’s death.

According to The Albany Times-Union, 29-year-old Jason Jones had been at a bar where police responded to a disturbance. He reportedly walked to the station and confronted cops there. The publication reports that when police first encountered him, they treated Jones as an emotionally disturbed person, before deciding to tase him, in an apparent attempt to take him into custody.

Jones died at a New York hospital on 15 December 2021, after spending six weeks in a medically-induced coma. The circumstances surrounding his death are the subject of a probe.

In the video, which has no sound, a visibly agitated Jones is seen taking off his hoodie and undershirt before taking off his shoes and socks. At some point, he douses himself with a large bottle of sanitiser that was on the table. Just seconds later, three officers advance towards him. One of them draws his taser and fires it at Jones, who then bursts into flames.

After the officers leave the room, he is then seen rolling on the floor and patting his head with his hands, in an attempt to put out the fire. After the flames die, one police officer comes back and appears to pat Jones’ upper back and head to assist him. An ambulance is then called to the scene and takes him to hospital. Jones’ condition was so serious, he spent 47 days on a ventilator before dying because his his lungs were badly burned, making it difficult for him to absorb oxygen.
