Some South Africans are in for several hours in the dark on Sunday, 28 August 2022, as Eskom will be implementing load reduction in seven provinces, between 17:00 and 22:00.

Load reduction is slightly different from load shedding – it is used to reduce the increasing demand for electricity that is supplied to members of the public. This is usually in neighbourhoods where illegal connections cause overload and damage infrastructure. Load reduction is meant to protect the infrastructure.

“Overloading also poses danger to people and property in the affected communities. Currently, Eskom is battling to keep up with the increased equipment failure caused by overloading that is costing millions to repair,” the embattled power utility said.

The provinces that are affected are: Gauteng, Limpopo, North West, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
