‘As low as MINUS 9°C!’ – SA facing big freeze on Wednesday night

It’s the first day of winter – and June kicks off with a big freeze. All nine provinces are set to record sub-zero temperatures tonight.

Eish! There’s cold, and there’s whatever frozen-over hell this is. The latest weather forecast for South Africa indicate that a ‘big freeze’ is on its way to the rest of Mzansi, after Gauteng was chilled to the core last night.

A bitter weather forecast for South Africa on Wednesday 1 June

The mercury plunged to MINUS 5°C in some parts of the province, with widespread frost and sub-zero temperatures reaching the suburbs of Pretoria and Johannesburg respectively. Although Gauteng is now on course for a slightly milder night, the same can’t be said for the rest of us.

That’s because the biting cold is setting itself down in EVERY province this evening. Even Limpopo and Mpumalanga will be exposed to the elements, with freezing patches likely to hit Polokwane, Mokopane, Middelburg, and Embalenhle.

Big freeze brings super-cold temperatures

Himeville and Underberg in KZN could experience -5°C in the early hours of Thursday morning, with Pietermaritzburg and Newcastle struggling to stay above zero. The Eastern Cape is on course for similar lows, with Queenstown and Maclear bearing the brunt of the cold.

Oudtshoorn is the Western Cape’s iciest spot on the forecast, and it’s in line for a night of -3°C temperatures. Touwsrivier and Ladismith are also braced for a similarly rough ride. In the Northern Cape, freezing temperatures will blanket the province, and a low of -7°C has been projected.

Free State weather forecast: Big freeze set to take hold overnight

You’ll also have to wrap up warm in North West, especially in the towns of Lichtenburg and Klerksdorp, with widespread freezing conditions on the radar. However, nowhere will come close to matching the bone-chilling temperatures heading for Free State…

  • Parts of Bloemfontein are set to plummet to -7°C
  • Bethlehem, Welkom, and Kroonstad have also been identified as ‘cold spots’ for the evening.
  • However, some rural areas are threatening to push the MINUS TEN mark.
  • Clear skies above Botshabelo pave the way for a forecast of -9°C, which could get even worse if conditions allow.
  • It’s quite likely, then, that select parts of Free State will be waking up to new minimum temperature records tomorrow.
