Sjoe, the south-west is suffering. The Western Cape is in for a teeth-chattering 48 hours or so, with a total of THREE cold fronts set to reach Cape Town and its surrounding areas by Saturday. A substantial amount of rain is coming – but just how bad will it be?

Cold fronts heading for Cape Town, Western Cape

Although none of the cold fronts identified can be described as ‘biblical’, the accumulation of rainfall between all three systems could present a problem in some areas. The central interior of the Western Cape, for example, is braced for freezing temperatures.

The SA Weather Service has since warned that this ‘very cold, wet, and windy’ spell could pose a danger to some citizens:

Sporadic snowfall has also been predicted over the Western Cape mountains, and parts of the extreme north-east. However, it’s the rainfall that is likely to be responsible for any damage over the next few days. Indeed, certain areas are set for a dousing.

This first cold front is already bedding itself in, bringing intermittent showers and wet spells on Thursday. A renewed burst of icy temperatures and downpours will be felt on Friday, before similar conditions kick-in on Saturday afternoon. It’s a miserable old forecast, that’s for sure.

By Sunday, the last few raindrops of the current system will have fallen. A cumulative forecast between now and then shows us what we’re dealing with. Parts of False Bay, Ceres, and the Cape Winelands are all on course for deluges above 50mm.

Though it’s not quite what we’d call ‘ark-building weather’, a significant amount of rainfall is predicted for Cape Town. More than 30mm is projected for the city centre, and it’s likely that this could cause traffic disruption and small, localised flooding incidents.
