Was the film crew targeted in the Krugersdorp gang rape betrayed by an ‘insider’? A shock twist has emerged in the case.

The sheer depravity of the Krugersdorp gang rape left a scar on the psyche of many South Africans. The brutal attack, which took place in July, shocked the nation. Multiple ‘zama-zamas’ performed acts of sexual violence on a film crew – but the case has taken another dark turn.

Production crew assistant arrested after Krugersdorp gang rape

On Wednesday, a female suspect was arrested on charges of ‘theft and defeating the ends of justice’. It’s understood that the woman, who was utilised by the production crew to help find the now-infamous shoot location, is also a former police officer.

Details are still sketchy at this point, but law enforcement officials believe that their woman in custody was – in some way or another – connected to the organisers and their horrendous criminal plot. She was found to be in possession of items belonging to a gang rape victim.

Former cop accused of ‘collusion’ with Krugersdorp gang rape suspects

The suspect was also picked out of an identity parade by some of the victims. It is alleged that the ex-cop was present during the Krugersdorp attack, but rather suspiciously, she was left untouched by the those holding women at gunpoint.

The suspect will be back in court on Friday 28 October. That’s the same day 14 men accused of carrying our the rapes are due in the dock. One of them has also been identified as a minor. In total, eight women were subjected to the sexual assault.

The story so far…

Dozens of arrests followed in the week after the case was reported. However, what happened in Krugersdorp exposed a number of frailties in the South African justice system. Issues with the DNA backlog – and inappropriate comments made by the Police Minister – have marred the process.

Much to the chagrin of the public, Bheki Cele caused outrage when he suggested that a woman who was ‘only raped once’ may have been fortunate that her ordeal was not prolonged. President Cyril Ramaphosa refused for fire his colleague in the wake of these remarks.
