One of South Africa’s most used highways was subject to another disruptive protest on Wednesday, just a week after truckers brought chaos to the roads in Free State. Today’s N6 blockade left drivers ‘stuck for hours’, before the offending vehicles were eventually cleared.

Road agency Arrive Alive have confirmed that law enforcement officials were used to disperse the abandoned motors, where several trucks were also used to blockade the N6. The incident took place near Cathcart, in the Eastern Cape.

“Law enforcement officers are attending to the blockade of the N6 near Cathcart. Motorists are advised to avoid the road, use alternative routes or delay their travels.”

Traffic brough to a halt for most of Wednesday afternoon

The N6 is a major commuter route, and it connects two metros from top-to-tail. The road runs from East London to Bloemfontein, spanning across two provinces and hundreds of kilometers. The sheer scale of this inconvenience was made clear by social media users caught up in the chaos.
