A local Community Policing Forum has warned South Africans to be vigilant about TWO separate online posts – both of which could compromise the investigation into the kidnapping of six-year-old Shanawaaz Asghar.

Kensington kidnapping: Latest news and updates for Thursday 18 August

While making his way to school, Shanawaaz Asghar was kidnapped outside his home in Kensington, Cape Town on the morning of Wednesday 17 August. Six armed suspects were involved in the snatching. The group fled the scene and no arrests were made.

Shanawaaz was reportedly wearing a navy tracksuit top, grey pants and black shoes. This is the same clothing he is wearing in a photograph circulating on social media. He is described as having a tall and slim build, with dark brown eyes and black hair.

Where is Shanawaaz Asghar? Rumours of his return ‘unfounded’

However, despite public eagerness to help, the Kensington CPF has noted ‘at least two false claims’ that are doing the rounds online. First and foremost, it is UNTRUE that the child has been found. A fake post has already been flagged by the law enforcement officials.

“A fake post doing the rounds that the kidnapped boy Shanawaaz Asghar has been found and on his way home, it is NOT TRUE! Its fake news. Please don’t share that post if you do get it. The Kensington CPF will update the public when there is any new information.” | Kensington CPF

Shanawaaz Asghar: Has a ransom been demanded during this kidnapping?

Secondly, the local CPF is also asking for concerned citizens NOT to publicise claims that a ransom is being asked for. Even if that is the case, spreading this news is deemed ‘irresponsible’. Forum chairman Cheslyn Steenberg fears that it could even pose ‘a risk to the boy’s life’.

“I see posts about a ransom being asked for. That type of reporting is irresponsible as it places the life of Shanawaaz at risk. Let us remain prayerful for his safe return…” | Cheslyn Steenberg
