Disturbing news has emerged from the sea waters between Cape Town and Robben Island.

TimesLIVE reports that a Robben Island ferry that was used to transport staff is at the center of a large rescue operation on Friday afternoon.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon confirmed that a rescue was currently taking place. A staff member from Nonkululeko Charters, who own the boat, also confirmed that there is an emergency currently taking place.

Reports indicate that the NSRI are transporting passengers from the stranded boat back to the mainland. Port control has also asked all vessels to keep away from the ferry.

A skipper of a luxury yacht told TimesLIVE that he has seen more than 60 people on board.

UPDATE: The NSRI has said that all passengers have now been accounted for, two have been taken to hospital.
