eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says no missing people have been reported from the heavy rains which wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal this past weekend.

The SA Weather Service had issued an alert for disruptive rainfall in parts of KZN, giving people time to evacuate to safer areas. Disaster management officials had to help move approximately 250 residents, mostly in low-lying areas, to dozens of care centres in eThekwini, which was the most affected.

Only one person was killed in the latest heavy rains.

Kaunda told eNCA that they were working on ensuring that those without water and electricity, in the wake of the floods, are attended to.

“Our teams will come back and reinstate some of the work that has been done before to ensure that people do access water. Many areas which have been affected, we have reinstated them…we are certain that by end of today, all areas will be covered in terms of those who were affected by the recent heavy rains,” he said.

KAUNDA: NO OTHER FATALITIES IN KZN FLOODS

But, the eThekwini Mayor, who was with Premier Sihle Zikalala, has said that they are yet to receive a full report on those killed and missing in the KZN floods, which means things could change. Kaunda added that evacuation efforts were essentially complete in some areas.

“We haven’t received a report of people who are missing, besides the report the premier has made reference to of one person from Inanda who was discovered on our rivers. There were no other fatalities… The treatment plant which is behind us has been severely affected. In the previous disaster in April, we put some remedial measures so that people will start receiving water so all those have been washed away.”

KZN is still recovering from the devastating floods in April, which destroyed billions of rands worth of infrastructure. More than 440 people were killed during that disaster.
