The destructive power of nature is not relenting on the east coast. On Tuesday, the KZN floods continued to wreak havoc across the province – with suburbs of Durban firmly in the firing line. The Umhlatuzana River had earlier burst its banks, which resulted in disaster for this Chatsworth-based Hindu Temple.

Tragic! Hindu Temple washed away in Chatsworth

The downpours are set to continue throughout Tuesday afternoon, battering an already rain-ravaged region. The deluges intensified on Monday, with mudslides ripping through residential properties and roads being swallowed by sinkholes. Sadly, it’s feared more damage is to come, with rainfall persisting through the day.

The Vishnu Temple in Chatsworth had been nestled by the banks of the Umhlatuzana for the past 70 years. The KZN floods of 2017 left it in a bad way, before donations were raised to fix the holy sanctuary. However, the ‘Mother Temple’ has been completely destroyed, as have a number of recent renovations.

KZN floods: Death toll, updates, and latest news for Tuesday 12 April 2022

The death toll from the KZN floods has now topped 20. Unfortunately, with conditions remaining bleak, that number is likely to rise, as torrents of water gush through urban areas and destroy infrastructure.

Durban residents were confronted by a disturbing sight on Tuesday morning, when a set of shipping containers were seen floating down the N2. The sheer force of the flood waters removed the cargo from their secure sites, dumping them in the middle of a busy commuter highway instead.

Both carriageways have been closed, and the M4 is also off-limits in and around the city. SANDF have been summoned to help with relief efforts, as local and national branches of COGTA activate their disaster management plans.
