The Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) has called for the resignation of Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.

Several South Africans and foreign nationals gathered at the Pieter Roos Park on Saturday morning, before their march got underway.

A heavy police presence had been following the march.

The group planned to hand over a memorandum at the Hillbrow and Johannesburg Central Police Station. They wanted SAPS to fully enforce the country’s laws to stop vigilantism and ensure foreign nationals are protected.

“The Minister of Home Affairs must resign today. He has failed not only migrants but also locals. We know they don’t have documents. The minister must resign because together with the Gauteng premier they have publicly stated that they are working together with Operation Dudula,” one of the representatives said.

On Friday, Hawks arrested a Pakistani kingpin at a Home Affairs branch in Krugersdorp who fraudulently manufactured passports and sold them to undocumented immigrants for at least R40 000.

Motsoaledi said he doesn’t blame South Africans for being angry at foreign nationals who commit crime in South Africa. He said he was angry too.

“We are being abused. People come here claiming to be asylum seekers and the next moment they defraud our documents. It’s unacceptable and we are going to wipe them off, there’s no question about it. We are not going to accept that our documents can just be willy nilly, wiped off like this and people’s futures are destroyed,” Motsoaledi said.

“This accusation of xenophobia every time you point out to something wrong is not going to touch me at all. I regard it as a toy gun that is pointed at us so that at best we shrink and at worst we duck under the table. I am not going to shrink, I am not going to duck, there is no toy gun that is going to scare me. What we are doing here is what is done by all the other countries. Every country has its borders, documents secure, and every country wants its sovereignty respected. It’s happening elsewhere in the continent and the world. Why should it be termed xenophobic when it’s done by South Africa.”
