AmaZulu Royal King Misuzulu has not had the easiest time since ascending the throne. This weekend, Misuzulu is expected to speak at the commemoration of the Isandlwana battle. But some members of the AmaZulu royal family who questioned his right to the throne, had taken the matter to court. The High Court in Pietermaritzburg has now thrown out that application.

King Misuzulu able to address Isandlwana commemoration

2022 marks 143 years since Zulu warriors fought off the British at the iconic Isandlwana hill in Nquthu KwaZulu-Natal.
A portion of the AmaZulu Royal Family approached the High Court this week. They sought an urgent application to have King Misuzulu barred from speaking. The group argued that Misuzulu should not address any AmaZulu events, as there is an ongoing court battle over his kingship.

The High Court ruled on Saturday that the applicant does not have a right to file the application. It also found that the matter was not urgent and dismissed it with costs.

AmaZulu nation traditional Prime Minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi reacted to the news while arriving at the commemoration event in Nquthu. He explained that he hopes “the penny has finally dropped” for the faction going against King Misuzulu.

“They have been up to this nonsense for too long. And actually learn your lessons from all the flops that have happened. In all the trials that your undermine the ascendency of our king. It is far from over because last week we met with the commission that has been set up by COGTA. We have to report back.”

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi told members of the media on eNCA.

What is the Battle of Isandlwana?

The battle took place on 22 January 1879 and is viewed as the first large-scale battle in the Anglo-Zulu war. Eleven days after British troops invaded Zululand, a group of 20 000 Zulu warriors attacked a key portion of the British group.

Despite mostly being armed with spears and cow-hide shields, the Zulu warriors defeated the British soldiers and there field guns. Over 1 300 British troops were killed, while historians believe the AmaZulu warriors suffered between 1 000 and 3 000 deaths.
