Julius Malema accused of PERJURY – thanks to his ‘Gucci gear’…

How could Julius Malema’s Gucci shoes (and other items) lead to a charge of perjury? With a little help from AfriForum, we can explain.

Lawyers representing AfriForum have launched a scathing attack against Julius Malema this week, after they accused him of committing perjury in court. But how have the EFF leader’s Gucci shoes and suits become the topic of debate?

Here’s why Julius Malema’s Gucci shoes, suits are now at the centre of a potential perjury case

The Equality Court is currently listening to AfriForum and Malema battle it out in a hate speech case. Juju has been accused of ‘propagating divisions’ by repeatedly singing the controversial Kill The Boer song – which the prosecution feels is tantamount to incitement.

AfriForum want Malema and his party to pay a R500 000 penalty for their alleged indiscretions – but the Red Berets aren’t having it. It was argued in court on Monday that the EFF simply ‘does not have the money’ to payout half-a-million rand to anyone.

That claim has been savaged by AfriForum’s advocates, however. Representatives of the lobby group argue that Malema’s attempt to plead poverty was actually an act of perjury – given that the firebrand politician owns several designer items, such as his infamous ‘Gucci shoes’.

Can the EFF pay AfriForum? Equality Court hears both arguments

Advocate Mfesane Ka-Siboto, Julius Malema’s lawyer, referred to the application which stated Malema and the EFF should bear the costs: He argued that the court case ‘took too long’, and according to him, a large part of the evidence ‘was without any merit’.

However, AfriForum aren’t in the mood to let sleeping dogs lie. Advocate Oppenheimer reminded the Equality Court that Juju was testifying under oath, and if he is lying about the state of the EFF’s bank accounts, that will constitute a criminal offence.
