Two police Sergeants attached to the Dobsonville SAPS station appeared in court on charges of kidnapping, extortion and possession of stolen goods on Monday, 20 February.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the matter was postponed until 1 March 2023 for a formal bail application.
The police officers were remanded in custody and are being held in the Roodepoort SAPS station.
“The officers allegedly tried to extort money from a Springs resident. It is alleged that the four Dobsonville SAPS members conducted a search on 17 February 2023, at a Springs home and confiscated money to the value of R35 000, gold, measuring scales and 25 litres of acidic mercury,” said IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping.
The suspects were arrested on the same day as the alleged extortion. A vehicle was found with two of the four suspects in Roodepoort. They were found with the stolen goods and an undisclosed amount of money.
The two police officers remain at large. They hold the rank of Constable.
