A 45-year-old police detective attached to the Kei Mouth station in the Eastern Cape is under investigation after he allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl on 8 August 2022.

GIRL RAPED IN POLICE STATION

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) spokesperson, Grace Langa, said the suspect allegedly collected the victim from her home to take her to the police station after she opened a case against her boyfriend.

“On their way to the station, the officer told the victim that he wanted to have a relationship with her,” said Langa. The victim refused his advances.

When they reached the station and entered the detective’s office, he allegedly forced himself on the victim and started kissing her before “penetrating her forcefully from the back.”

“It is alleged the victim cried and while the suspect was raping her, she bit the suspect on his left shoulder with her teeth and that she was able to pick up the bottle and hit the suspect on his head until the bottle broke,” said Langa.

The victim allegedly used a piece of the broken bottle to stab the suspect in his shoulder. She then grabbed his cellphone and threw it against a wall and stomped on it.

When the detective picked up his phone and inspected the damage, the girl took the opportunity to run from the office into the Community Service Centre of the Kei Mouth station.

She told the officers on duty what had happened and immediately opened a rape case. IPID was informed and after meeting with the victim, investigators immediately arranged counselling for her. Langa said she was “visibly traumatised and in a very emotional state.”

The investigation continues.

Update: As of Wednesday, 17 August, the detective has not been arrested yet. However, the Directorate expects him to be taken into custody imminently.
