Imizamo Yethu fire displaces 200, destroys dozens of structures

No injuries or fatalities were reported in the Imizamo Yethu fire. Officials faced a volatile crowd while responding to the blaze.

Imizamo Yethu fire displaces 200, destroys dozens of informal structures

A fire ripped through parts of Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, in Cape Town on Sunday evening, 26 March. Several informal structures were destroyed in the blaze.

City officials faced a volatile crowd while responding to the blaze

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the City was alerted to the fire shortly after 19:00 on Sunday.

A total of 18 firefighting appliances and 70 staff rushed to the scene and helped to contain and extinguish the fire by just after midnight.

“…However, crews were once again confronted by a volatile crowd blocking access to the fire,” said Carelse.

“Law Enforcement and the South African Police Service (SAPS) had to be called on to stabilise the situation,” he added.

No injuries or fatalities reported in the Imizamo Yethu blaze

Around 60 structures were destroyed in the fire, with over 200 people displaced as a result. Fortunately,  no injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
